Vintage Thwing-Albert Instrument Co. CT-1 handheld 300 lb capacity cable tension tester dating to the mid-1940s, with wooden carrying/storage case.After extensive research, additional information about this unusual instrument was obtained through the American Foundry Society (AFS). A member of an AFS sand-testing committee contacted a personal contact at Thwing-Albert, who identified it as:“a CT-1 Handheld 300 lb. capacity cable tension tester from the Aircraft Industry that someone had modified for our industry. It was made in the mid 1940’s.”The contact also indicated that no literature sheet or instruction manual is available for the instrument.The dial itself is marked “SAND TENSIOMETER – THWING-ALBERT INST. CO. – PHILADELPHIA, U.S.A.” The identification plate is marked Type CT and No. 9939.Interestingly, none of the members of the AFS sand-testing committee who reviewed the photographs had previously seen this particular instrument, and they found its adaptation for sand testing unusual and interesting.Condition / FunctionalityThis is a vintage instrument approximately 80 years old and has not been professionally tested, serviced, or calibrated.As a basic functional check, a soft eraser was placed between the jaws and the handle was squeezed. The gauge needle responded and moved to approximately 75, but it remained there after pressure was released rather than returning to its previous position.No attempt has been made to repair, lubricate, adjust, disassemble, or calibrate the instrument.Because proper operation cannot be verified and the needle does not return after movement, this instrument is being sold AS-IS / FOR PARTS OR REPAIR. No representation is made regarding accuracy or calibration.The instrument shows age-related cosmetic wear consistent with its vintage. The wooden case has scratches, marks and wear. The leather carrying handle shows significant age-related cracking and deterioration but remains attached and feels sturdy.
